To provide education and opportunity to the children of La Entrada, Honduras.
Help for Honduras is a charitable organization which was established by high school students Ryan and Jack Rogers in 2009 to raise funds to support the education of children in La Entrada, Honduras, through partnership with the Hearts for Honduras School.
Honduras is the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere with nearly 21% of the population living on less than $1 US dollar per day. In Honduras, public education is not free. Parents are required to purchase uniforms, books, and school supplies. As a result the children of the poorest families rarely have access to an education or a means of working their way out of the cycle of poverty that they have been born into. In Honduras, less than 50% of the population graduates for sixth grade and only 10-15% complete high school.
The Hearts for Honduras School was started in 2000. The school was the vision of a pair of local Honduran public school teachers who saw and responded to the need for the poorest children in town to receive an education. The school has grown signficantly from one grade and twenty-three students to six grades and nearly two hundred students by 2011.
The school provides an education, uniforms, a meal a day, clean water, and basic medical and dental care to children who would not otherwise have access to an education. Since the first sixth grade class in 2004, 73 students have graduated and more than 70% continue their education through the seventh grade and beyond with the financial support of the Hearts for Honduras School.
As of September, 2012 we have raised over $7,200 to support the Hearts for Honduras School.
